Heat and sun can change the effects — and effectiveness — of some medications. Be especially careful storing certain medications during summer months. They can react to UV exposure and lose effectiveness if they get too hot.
Stay healthy during the hot summer months
Here are some ways to protect yourself from the heat:
- Drink plenty of water
- Use a sunscreen with at least SPF 40 and reapply often
- Wear hats and long sleeves outside between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Ask your doctor about a Vitamin D supplement if you don't get enough sun
- See your primary care provider for regular skin checks
Watch for heat stroke
Move to a cool place at the first sign of dizziness, nausea, or fatigue. Drink water and rest. If sweating stops or confusion starts, it could be heat stroke. Call 911 immediately and cool down with ice packs.
If you have any questions about what you can do to be safe this summer, talk to your care team. They’ll help you stay safe and on track with your meds.
